Move easily and act consciously with the Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique is a proven method for integrating body and mind that teaches us how to go about our everyday activities with alertness, ease and balance. It is based on recognizing and discarding unfavourable habits in movement, reaction and thinking. Mental presence and coordination can free us from a multitude of restrictions, disturbances and stress and thus sustainably increase our performance, creativity and well-being. The Alexander Technique is a basic skill for life, whether at work or at home, in sport or in the arts, or in special circumstances, illness or disability.

Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955)

The Australian actor and Shakespeare reciter Frederick Matthias Alexander saw his professional career jeopardized when his voice broke in the middle of his performances. Neither doctors nor voice coaches were able to provide sustained help. Only when he discovered, through years of self-observation, which bodily reactions and postures he was damaging himself with when reciting, did he find a way to regenerate and preserve his voice. It soon became apparent that the principles he had discovered could also be applied to many other unfavorable habits. This gave rise to the Alexander Technique as a method of integrating movement and thought. In its more than one hundred years of history, the Alexander Technique has become established in many countries and is taught by more than 4000 teachers worldwide.

What happens in a lesson?

In Alexander lessons, with the help of your teacher, you learn to recognize unfavorable movement and reaction patterns and to develop your self-awareness. By pausing and giving yourself mental instructions, you will learn simple principles that you can apply independently in everyday life. The teacher will support you in this process with words and pedagogically trained hands.

Posture, reaction and health

Posture and reaction have a major impact on our health: on muscle tone and joints, on nerves and blood circulation, on breathing and digestion. Alexander Technique is therefore a comprehensive form of health care that promotes performance and well-being. At the same time, it improves the conditions for the healing of many diseases. The Alexander Technique is not a treatment, but an educational method.
